Origin, classification and history

Origin: Switzerland.
F.C.I classification: Group 6 - hounds and dogs by blood trail.

Lorigine del Segugio del Jura (Bruno of the Jura - Jura Laufhund) is common to all Swiss Hounds. This type of hound has been present in its territory since ancient times. They probably derive from the "Egyptian Hounds", which were brought to Europe by the Phoenicians. In the fifteenth century, "Italian Hounds" were better known, even in Italy. In addition to the Swiss Hounds there are also the "Little Swiss Hounds", in the same varieties as the major ones, from which they derive, but in a reduced form. In Italy they are almost totally supplanted by the two breeds of Italian Hounds. The only Swiss still quite widespread is the "Hound of the Jura".

General aspect

All Swiss hounds are medium-sized dogs, rather elongated, with dry heads. The Hound of the Jura is a little more massive, heavy and low on the limbs compared to the other three, which instead differ almost exclusively in the color of the coat.

They are game hunters, used mainly for hare hunting. All equipped with a very fine nose. They have great hunting security, powerful voice. They also have no problem hunting in rough terrain. Not very expansive character. Very fond of the owner and their people. They have an innate passion for hunting. They are not suitable for city life, nor for the role of the companion dog. Always reliable with children. Rustic and very robust dogs. They must live in the countryside, or at least have the opportunity to do a lot of daily motorbikes.
